What are Milia?
These are small benign epidermal cyst, they are a plug of sebum and keratin that has become trapped beneath the skin, or raised above it. Seen as white hard solid lumps they tend to grow in size, become harder (as the contents keratinises). Some people may only have one and others exhibit a proliferation of up to 40-60 of them at any one time.
What causes Milia?
Milia are a disorder of the sebaceous glands, caused by an undeveloped sebaceous gland, sebum and dead skin becomes trapped in a blind duct with no surface opening. A fine cuticle of skin grows over the top surface preventing the contents escaping. Their cause is unknown thought to be related to diet with a high cholesterol count, excessive Vitamin C, dry, dehydrated skin, and using too rich moisturising cream.
How do we treat Milia?
Once milia become noticeable to the eye and cosmetically unattractive clients will often seek removal. Milia is easily treated with using diathermy (AC) the current cauterises the blemish which gently dries them up so that the hard keratinised centre is broken down and the milia is reabsorbed back into the skin., although some take a few days to disperse, results are usually instant. This is a much gentler way to treat them, as opposed to removing them with a microlance, which can damage the skin. Treatment needs to be supported with a pH formula corrective and preventative skin care recommended to prevent reoccurrence.
